As stage technology, such as sound and lighting, is evolving to be more and more an immersive experience rather than just framing performance, this work questions whether the stage, as well as the performance, could not also change and rearrange their spatial relationship with the audience. Could the technology available today be used to fragment and distribute a performance across a single auditorium or even across multiple spaces?
The marble run - the simple action of a ball rolling from top to bottom of a designed structure - a performance that has to happen in one piece as otherwise it would not work. The marble would simply get stuck or lost if its rails were not connected to each other.
However, turning analog into digital and making use of lighting, visual and sound technology not to only support the performance but to become its representative, the marble can suddenly appear and disappear at will and even travel from room to room through solid walls and ceilings.
The Marble Maze Project is an experimental attempt to rearrange the spatial layout of a performance by using differing media typologies to fragment the components and distribute them across multiple spaces. This can give an audience the possibility to arrange their own individual storyline by choosing the order of experiencing the fragments. The appearance and disappearance of the performance in unexpected spaces and unusual representations gives the spectator the ability to explore and discover.

Office Party comes from the playful idea that our workspaces may come to life in our absence. It also touches on the future of architectural design, and speculates about responsive and kinetic structures which can adapt to the needs of inhabitants. By using networked kinetic technologies, Office Party choreographs a performance in the empty offices of the city creating a moment of magic.

2020 has been defined by quarantine and social distancing, with the majority of Londoners now working from home. “Office Party” comes from the playful idea that our work spaces may come to life in our absence. It also touches on the future of architectural design, and speculates about responsive and kinetic structures which can adapt to the needs of inhabitants. Kinetic architecture is typically theorized as cybernetic systems designed for efficiency or adaptivity. Office Party imagines the more playful application of these same technologies, by using networked architecture to create a choreographed performance. The joy of performing objects is increased when they can be cleverly situated in an otherwise typical cityscape. Office blinds are a banal fixture, and their unexpected liveliness allows this art installation to create a moment of magic.
Holon-Cube experiments with the relationship between stage and audience. How can an audience interact with a performance? Can a story be split into parts to create new experiences? This project takes on the idea of a fragmented performance, as well as the magical and mystical element of appearance and disappearance through audience interaction. The cube’s four mirrored sides represent four individual fragments of a performance. It is the audience’s direct interaction with each side of the object that triggers and rearranges the fragments to form a new meaning and unique experiences upon each encounter.

Artist: Marcus Lyall
Producer: Bristol Light Festival
Project/Technical Manager: Michael Wagner
Location: Bristol Corn Exchange
Date: February 2023
Created during lockdown, this large-scale light installation is activated by people’s voices to illuminate a whole building according to the sound. Taking centre stage at an iconic Bristol building, this piece will offer the chance for visitors to the festival to light up The Corn Exchange on Corn Street in a sea of colour as this monumental light installation illuminates the building in response to their voice. The louder and longer the outburst, the bigger the response from the building. The light installation interprets every voice and scream differently, to create a unique response for each person.
The installation has been created by internationally renowned artist Marcus Lyall, who is known for experimental film and interactive moving-image projects, including award-winning stage visuals for The Chemical Brothers, a Metallica feature film, and artworks that have been shown around the world. His involvement with Bristol Light Festival establishes the event as one not to be missed in 2023.

An unusual performance in an unexpected place
Bacherlor Thesis Michael Wagner - HTW Chur 2017
